The Indian Diaspora: East Indians in the Caribbean
East Indians or Indo-Caribbeans are descendants of indentured labourers who migrated from northern, northeastern and southern parts of India to various colonies in the Caribbean. There's approximately 1,200,000 East Indians in Caribbean countries and 400,000 living in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and the UK. Most are Hindus and some are Muslim or Christian. East Indian holidays such as Phagwah (or Holi, Hindu), Diwali (Hindu), Hosay (Muslim) are popularized and share wide appreciation in the West Indies. Bollywood films are watched by all races. Indian delicacies like roti and curry were introduced by Indians. Dances (like the wine) and the tassa drums are East Indian. The biggest creation by the Indo-Caribbean community is Chutney Soca: a mix of Hindi, soca, dancehall and calypso music.
Indo-Caribbeans represent 51% of Guyana, 40% of Trinidad & Tobago, 38% of Suriname, 6% of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 5% of Belize and French Guiana, 4% of Panama and St. Lucia, 3% of Jamaica, Grenada, Barbados and also live in Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Cuba, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands.
